RPL Programme

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that says experience does count when it comes to gaining a trade qualification.

Experience matters - now make it count!

Did you or one of your employees miss out on a trade qualification that’s recognised in New Zealand?

Do you think the required skills and knowledge are all there?

Then Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be for you.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that says experience does count when it comes to gaining a trade qualification. It recognises relevant and appropriate skills and knowledge obtained through training, work experience and life experience.

RPL can help those that perhaps missed out on gaining their trade qualification when they were younger, or people skilled in more than one trade or trained outside of New Zealand to obtain accreditation. By demonstrating your skills and knowledge to us through an evidence based formal assessment process, an applicant within the Competenz gazetted coverage can obtain a relevant qualification

What are the benefits of RPL?

Competenz works with the applicant to develop the best solution so that an applicant can achieve a nationally recognised qualification valued by industry and can provide formal evidence of competency to customers and other businesses the applicant provides engineering services to.

What's the process?

A Competenz account manager or training advisor helps select the right qualification and guides the applicant through the process. The applicant then completes the application form and submits it along with the required supporting evidence of competency for it to be formally assessed.

A Competenz RPL assessor reviews the application and completes a verification process to confirm competency against the qualification. This may involve referee checks, an interview and an onsite visit. If there are any gaps in knowledge and skills identified a personalised training plan is agreed with the applicant and their employer for the completion of the requirements.

This may include attending additional training courses to fill any gaps in knowledge and skills.

Assessment is undertaken to establish that there is sufficient evidence to prove their knowledge and competency. When the applicant completes all requirements the unit standards in the programme and a full qualification can be awarded.

The RPL process is not funded and is a user pays service.  Price may vary and is dependant upon the time it takes the RPL assessor and Competenz staff to complete the process.
